English fluency

Non-native English speakers (like me) may encounter hardship in conveying their ideas. I am not aware of any miracle strategy to overcome this obstacle. However, the following strategies may help:

  • In May 2017, UNL announced a research-writing resouce for postdocs and graduate students.

  • Of course, you need to pass the ITA qualification.

  • International Affairs @ UNL have a program to pair you with a conversation partner, usually a UNL student. Highly recommended.

  • Lincoln Literacy Program has a similar program where you'll also be paired with a tutor for English conversation.

  • It seems that Dr. Eric D. Turley from the English Department holds weekly sessions to help foreign students writing their theses. During Fall 2004, these sessions were on Fridays from 12:00 to 1:00 pm in Room 219, in the English department. You may want to contact Dr. Turley for more details.

  • Keep actively working on your English by reading news magazines and listening to the radio (e.g., BBC and NPR).
